Inaccurate result may occur when a pressure gauge is not properly calibrated. This can impact the quality of the final product, the safety of operations, and the overall efficiency of the system.

Many industries, such as the pharmaceutical, automotive, and manufacturing industries, have some strict standards regarding the calibration of pressure measuring instruments. Proper calibration ensures that companies comply with these standards and can track any non-conformities.

Pressure Calibration Method

  1. Static Pressure Test Method

This method involves applying a known pressure to a measuring device and comparing it with the results given by the device. The applied pressure usually comes from a pre-calibrated standard.

  1. Use of Deadweight Tester

The deadweight tester is a very accurate and commonly used pressure calibration tool. The tool works by weighing the mass imposed on a piston which produces a known pressure. You should compare this pressure with the result in the measuring device.

  1. Calibration with Reference Manometer

A reference manometer is a calibration tool that uses a liquid column or electronic device to measure pressure with high accuracy. The tool is to verify results from other pressure measuring devices.

  1. Electronic Calibration

In electronic calibration, an electrical signal relating to pressure is generated by a calibration device and compared with the signal produced by the pressure measuring device to be calibrated.

 

Calibration Process
  1. Preparation

Initial preparation involves a visual inspection of the measuring tool to ensure there is no physical damage that could affect measurement accuracy.

  1. Choose the experience and certified calibration operator

Ensure that the operator who will calibrate the pressure measuring instrument has sufficient knowledge and experience in calibrating the pressure measuring instrument.

  1. Check environmental conditions
    Ensure the calibration environment is protected from external disturbances such as vibration, extreme temperatures or excessive light.
  2. Select the pressure calibration method and measuring range

Select a calibration method that is appropriate to the type of pressure measurement to be calibrated. Determine the pressure measuring distance and ensure that the reference measuring tool used has a higher measuring distance.

  1. Carry out Pressure Gauge calibration

Connect the pressure gauge to a reference standard and record the reading. Compare readings with reference standards and adjust if necessary. Repeat this process at various points in the calibration range.

  1. Report generation
    Create a calibration results report which includes information about calibration results, measurement differences, accuracy, uncertainty, and environmental conditions during calibration. Save the report for future calibration reference.
  2. Calibration Certificate

Issue a calibration certificate to ensure that the measuring instrument has been calibrated within the specified range and is suitable for use. The certificate must include the calibration range, reference standards used, and any adjustments made, as well as the date and technician responsible for the calibration.
